Sound

Sound

Clip 1: (500) Days of Summer

This clip from (500) Days of Summer is almost entirely symbolism for how the character is feeling, which is quite clearly overly happy and in love. Sound is a huge part of this scene as it emphasises the character's emotions with the use of an upbeat and catchy song. It's hard to distinguish what type of sound is being used in this clip but the main thing we can establish is that it is parallel because the song matches what is happening in the scene. It appears that the music is diegetic at the beginning as the character is reacting to the song and dancing but we get the impression that the music is in his head. This is due to the fact the music would not actually be playing in the street for everyone in the scene to hear. You could also argue that the music is non-diegetic as the music is not actually playing aloud for the character's to hear but just parallel background music. However, as the scene progresses more and more characters appear to hear the same music because they begin to dance as well as the main character. This makes it seem like the whole scene is in the main character's head including other character's actions as they would not actually hear this music if it were playing in the main character's head.
One other example of diegetic sound in the clip is the sound of the fountains spraying water as both the characters and the audience are able to hear this which emphasises the symbolism used when the fountains appear to come alive as the main character walks past them.

Clip 2: Saving Private Ryan

In this clip, diegetic sound is used but the volume of the sound changes as the character's ability to hear changes. When the clip begins there is a lack of sound suggesting the main character cannot hear well as a consequence of the sound of a gunshot or an explosion. This muffled and quiet sound can be heard by both the character and the audience at the same volume level. The effect of a lack of sound in this clip is one which creates the feeling of shock and confusion on the main character's behalf due to so much happening in that moment. At one point further on in the clip the sound suddenly gets a lot louder when another character is talking to the main character as reality seems to hit him quickly when another person acknowledges him. The sound is still diegetic but the volume has increased resulting in us hearing gunshots, explosions, the sound of the sea and characters screaming more clearly which has the same sort of effect on the audience as it does the character because everything comes back into perspective.
